Summary of Equipment Required by Length of Vessel
The tables presented below represent a summary of the equipment requirements
for Pleasure Craft as specified in the Small Vessel Regulations.
Under specific circumstances, the following vessels may be exempted from carrying the minimum equipment listed below.
- multi-hull vessel with multiple-sealed hull,
- non power-driven vessel of less than 6 m,
- paddleboat,
- stand-up paddleboard,
- personal watercraft,
- racing canoes,
- racing kayaks,
- racing rowing shells,
- sailboard,
- self-baling sealed hull, and
- water cycle.
For example, a bailer or manual bilge pump is not required to be carried on board a pleasure craft
that cannot retain a sufficient quantity of water to make it capsize or whose compartments are sealed and are not readily accessible.
This means, for example, that a bailer or bilge pump is not required for a 4 metre pontoon boat or a personal watercraft.

The four types of approved pyrotechnics are Rocket Parachute Flares, Multi-Star Flares, Hand Flares, and Buoyant or Hand Smoke Signals.
For a pleasure craft more than 6 metres in length, the number of pyrotechnic distress signals may be reduced up to a maximum of 50%
of the number permitted in the table, IF the pleasure craft is equipped with one of
(a) two-way radio communication; or
(b) a 406 MHz personal locator beacon; or
(c) a 406 MHz emergency position-indicating radio beacon.
