Breakdowns

As a responsible operator, you should check and maintain your vessel and equipment on a regular basis so that they are capable of functioning properly at all times. By doing so, you reduce the probability of breakdowns occuring.

However, despite your best efforts, breakdowns will occur.  When a breakdown does occur you must take immediate and appropriate action to minimize damage to the vessel or equipment, and risk of injury or loss of life to those on board.

You should consider the following actions in response to breakdowns on board.

  • alter speed (or stop), if appropriate.
  • anchor the craft, if appropriate.
  • correct the problem, if possible.
  • exhibit signals to indicate distress and need of assistance if necessary.

Your actions are not limited to those listed above. You will have to use your best judgement and common sense for each incident.
